My Dad - 1952-2012

Penulis : Unknown on Tuesday, 17 July 2012 | 15:08

Tuesday, 17 July 2012

This past week has been the hardest week of my life.

My father passed away on Thur, July 12 and nothing could have ever prepared me for that.

I arrived on Mon afternoon and when I walked in to his hospice room everyone was sitting silently around his bed. His wife roused him enough to let him know I was there and I'll never forget the look in his eyes as he said my name.

For the most part he stayed in a sleeping state and when he was awake it was more like a semi-consciousness. When he was semi-conscious he was experiencing the terminal agitation, which even though I read about it, it's not the same as seeing it first hand.

My brother and I stayed in the hospice room Monday-Wed along with his wife. It was so hard seeing my dad in that condition, knowing he wasn't really there with us. I couldn't believe the change in him since we were there on the 4th of July.

On Wed the chaplain arranged to have communion in my dad's room with all his family. After that he brought us all to the family area and told us about a book called Final Gifts. A lot of time the person who is dying waits until everyone has left the room and chooses that time to pass away - as their gift to you. He was saying that my dad might be hanging on waiting for a moment like that and we were always in his room surrounding him and maybe we wanted to talk as a family and go out to eat etc. So we did just that and gave him some time alone in his room if that was what he had wanted and was waiting for.

He was really agitated on Wed afternoon and they added Haldol to his meds. We finally got him in what seemed to be a pretty comfortable position and he basically didn't wake up after that. I went to bed and wanted to pray for another day, but I knew if I had another day I'd ask for another one after that, and another. I knew that having another day wouldn't be enough. Instead I prayed for my dad to have peace and to not suffer anymore. I knew he wouldn't have wanted to be in the state he was in for very long.

He slept all through Wed night, unlike the previous nights where he was up a lot with the agitation. We didn't even hear him coughing throughout the night like he had been. We woke up Thur and it seemed like he was so peaceful. His heart rate was regular and his breathing steady, although we knew he had pretty bad lung congestion. It seemed like he could've gone on like he was for another week or so and we were in limbo. That morning I asked the nurse what she thought and she agreed - that in his present state he probably could go another week like that; because he was young, active and breathing ok. She even said, "Do I think it'll be today or even tomorrow? No, not with how he is now."

His wife and I left that morning around 10 to go have breakfast. I came back that afternoon around 2ish with one of my brothers. No one was in the room and when we walked in I was stunned to see how my dad's breathing had changed...he was breathing very rapidly and noisily, nothing like he was when I left him that morning. I kissed him on the head and told him, "Remember Dad, if you need to go it is ok. We all understand." Eventually everyone had come back from various errands and were either on the patio or in the family room.

The nurse tried a few things to make him more comfortable and to hopefully get his breathing to slow down. She said to make sure we pushed the button for the bolus on his morphine every 15 min. I was in his room alone, sitting in a far corner, I got up to give him the extra dose of morphine and sat down in the chair by his bed.

My brother and my father's wife came in the room at that time and a few seconds later so did the nurse. She said his breathing had slowed to a more normal rate and as we were all staring at him something changed with his breathing. All of a sudden he took his last breaths and the rest of the family was called in to his room. We were all around his bedside with him. I just couldn't believe that as of that morning he seemed like he would hang on for another week and by that evening we were saying our final goodbyes to him.

I can't believe he is gone. I can't believe I won't ever see my father again or hear his voice. He was too young and had so much life left in him. I miss him more that I ever imagined I would.

The greatest part of online shopping...

I have a confession to make... I love, love to online shop. Not only is it the greatest place to find fab deals but I get all sorts of happiness running through me when I see a package in my mailbox. Or even better, when the mailman has to give me a special key to one of the overflow boxes. Now that makes this lady tick.

Well... yesterday would be one of those days where I had to sit down while opening all of my fun mail because I was that excited.

All of this fun was waiting in an overflow box for me when I got home from work.

I spy a Coco signature on one of my boxesssss! If you're a nail nerd, like myself, you already know why this is exciting. If you are asking "who the eff is Coco and why did she write on your package?!"... Well, she is the daughter of the genius behind Cult Nails and her mom just released a collection that Coco created all on her own. Currently the collection is only on sale as a whole collection, I needed the whole collection (yes, needed), and the rest is history.

This is Cult Nails' Coco Untamed collection! I can't wait to try out 'I Got Distracted' (the 2nd from the left)... It's so beautiful in the bottle, I can't imagine what this polish is going to look like on my nails.

Moving on let's open the big box, shall we?

Hello there, China Glaze neon collection! Well, not all of the collection, but the colors I needed from the collection. (aside from Hang-Ten Toes... because I already own that one.) I have no idea which one of these I'll choose to wear first. They're all ah-ma-zinggggg!

This is a pretty indie polish by Candy Lacquer called White Wedding and I'm in loveeee. It's white glitter in a clear base, so you can really put this over most any color polish. I also loveeee that there are hearts scattered throughout it, too.

So, yeah. That was way too fun and I didn't even get into my July Birchbox. I'm going to save that one for tomorrow, I think. There's something in it called "roasted nut roll"... Need I say more?

Nail Polish Swap
Speaking of nail polish, have you signed up for the nail polish swap I'm co-hosting with Jenn at Perfectly Imperfect?! Tomorrow is the last day to sign up and I promise you that you don't want to miss out on this fun!! What are you waiting for? Go sign up!!

Weekend Escapades.

Penulis : Unknown on Monday, 16 July 2012 | 05:00

Monday, 16 July 2012

Oh Monday, we meet again. This Monday is much more of a pain because I had one of those really great weekends that you never want to end. I'll get over it though, we're just that much closer to my birthday festivities that will be going down in less than 2 weeks!

Anyways, more on that later. Our weekend... let's take a look, shall we?

Friday night that charming boyfriend of mine took me out for dinner and drinks. I got all fancified for the first time in, what feels like, forever.

By the way, check out the lashes. MAC's new False Extreme = the bombdotcom. More on that later this week. Really, it deserves it's own post.

Le boyfriend and myself getting our Friday night drink on.

These would be pitchers, yes I said pitchers - with straws in them, full of peach sangria. They were 2-4-1 and they were fantastic. Fabulous start to our weekend, if I do say so myself.

After dinner we were a total old person couple and went home. In our defense we did drink a little more and we played some good ol' Phase 10. If you've never played let me just tell you that it is a total blast and that does not make us old, thankyouverymuch. (no, I'm not at all testy that my quarter of a century birthday is near...)

Ella's way serious about hiding her cards from everyone.

See? Promise we had fun. ;)

My weekend nails, compliments of Make Up Store - Greta and the new Bundle Monster plates. The crazy holo effects of this polish is to dieeeee for.

Saturday was a really bright and sunny Florida day so we decided to make a pool day out of it.

We hung by the pool for a few hours and sipped on some cold brewskis. It was really relaxing and even better because my SPF 30 kept your girl free of sunburn, and free of wrinkles, duh.

Brew and nails. I couldn't help myself. Bright sun and holo go together like brews at the pool.

Finally, yesterday we made our way downtown to the Farmers Market. I went for one reason and that reason is this bread.

This loaf of deliciousness would be blue cheese and garlic bread and my lawdddd it is heaven in a bag. If you ever go to the Downtown Orlando Farmers Market you need to find the vendor and get enough of this bread to make sandwiches for the rest of your life. Seriously though.

I'm ending this soon, I promise. Before I do, I need to give a big shout out to that phenomenal boyfriend of mine. Yes, it's time for me to go ham on this bad boy.

I have been on the hunt for the new Girl Scout cookie Crunch bars for a little over a week and after about 13 failed attempts at finding them, I found the last bar at a CVS. They only had one. Seriously, my luck. (it was delicious, ps) Ok, so back to the boyfriend.

He came home with a bag full of all 3 flavors and legit made it rain Girl Scout candy bars on me.
Ah-freak-ing-ma-zing. You ladies with your flower pictures got nothing on my candy bar picture, ya heard?

Props to you amazingly fantastical boyfriend of mine, you are the epitome of "a keeper" in my book.

"Mixed Drinks"

"Mixed Drinks"

Fell asleep in my recliner.
Woke up in deep water
Taking pride between thigh muscles.
Under Friday night lights,
We fight and tussle.
Maximum hustle.
Beautiful struggle.
Prettier than the face
At the center of my makeshift monocle.
Angular shots flash
From my photographic shot glass
Forty-five degrees for a playful pass.

Hands down.
Eyes lower.
Observe grandeur and lore.
Captain Morgan leads me to shore.
Softer than sand in the wind.
Ceiling fans above warm skin.
Circular rotations.
Uprising.
Ascension of fragrance.
Hormonal displacement.
Perspire with minimal patience.
Walk the line. Follow cadence.

Hug the bar top, pretty girl.
Hair covers your countenance.
Is there a lapse in confidence?
This was just round two.
That's fine.
Stick to the wine.
More Anejo for me.
You can sit through round three.
Who? Me?
Always a gentleman.
Gentle when I sip.
A handkerchief for your lips.

You say I'm a horn dog.
I like to think I'm a Land Shark
Swimming through Boston lager
Under your Blue Moon.
Can we leave soon?
They say aggressive drunks
Become Mad Dogs trapped in rooms
Where 20/20 vision can't resume.
Busy getting dizzy.
This one is fizzy.
You're feeling giddy.
Hours past tipsy.

Hugging this corner table
Like rungs on a ladder.
Exchanging farce filled fables
Amid short sips and laughter.
We spill, smile, hum
And chug spiced rum.
This receipt is a distorted feat.
Can barely compute the sum.
Chuckled way too hard.
Be nice to your bladder.
I'll wait right here.
We can head home after.

Your frothy mug is the truth.
We drank up the loot
So I bypass mandibles.
Member migrates past tooth.
Empty my champagne flute.
Stem twister ties the locks
But liberates hours of tension.
Don't forget the rocks.
My spirits carry more flavor
Than any lush could hope to savor.
You tip over the cask
And extract from the barrel:

Rub my Tom Collins
on your Shirley Temple
until I pop fast
like the contents of a shot glass
all over your pearly dimples.
Placement plain and simple.
Lather for your beautiful brown skin.
Lips display a cheerful grin.

Straws deliver cold servings
Of plum pineapple pear
Laced with pomegranate peach
Triple distilled 80 proof speech.
I remove your cold filter
To expose hints of warmth
Emanating from this service well.
Intoxicating taste. Inebriating smell.
I treat it well.
Generously dig in
Between shots of gin
Lips on sideways sway
From Amsterdam to Bombay.
Spread the bald eagle.
I'm reaching the Pinnacle;
Eating the cake and the icing.

On a limited edition mission
To alleviate your nerves.
Very special emissions
Say that you were reserved.
Hints of cherry and lemon-lime soda
But you're nowhere near sober.
No trace of innocence, surely.
Did you say your name was Shirley?
My name? Well, um…………
You can call me Evan.
I'm a brother from Bourbon.
My best friend is Jack Daniels.
He married Remy Martin
In Old New Orleans
But she left him for Jose' Cuervo
When he met Bacardi in Puerto Rico.

But anyways,
What more of you?
I enjoyed your long neck
And the glow in your hue.
Told you I'm a gentleman.
This isn't just a shake up
In hopes of smearing your makeup…………
……………………………………
……………then I wake up.

Was a glass sitting there?
Ringing wet hair
As I sit up in this lawn chair.
My flask is empty
And my bottle is bare.
Can't find my wallet anywhere.
It all felt like a dream.
No evidence of this affair.

How I Did It - Nail Stamping Tutorial

Penulis : Unknown on Friday, 13 July 2012 | 06:00

Friday, 13 July 2012

I posted my latest manicure on Instagram yesterday and got a lot of feedback, mostly wondering how I did it! I am a polish lover who thinks everyone should be too, so I figured I'd do a little tutorial so those of you who are interested can try it out.

Tools needed:
Nail plates (I used plate 322 from Bundle Monster's newest plate set)
Polish fit for stamping. I used Konad Special White
Note: not all polishes will stamp correctly.
Stamper & scraper. Mine are Konad brand.
Nail polish for base coat. I used 2 coats of China Glaze 'Turned Up Turquoise'.
Brush & polish remover for clean up.
Top coat. I used Seche Vite.

How to:

1. Paint all of your nails with your desired base color polish. Let this coat dry very well. You can even put a fast drying top coat over it if you are impatient.

2. Paint a thin layer of your stamping polish over the image you've selected to stamp with.

3. Scrape off excess polish from plate and gently roll (think one-way rocking motion... only one way, don't actually rock it) your stamper over it. You will see the design on your stamper. If it didn't transfer how you were hoping, clean it off with remover and start over. It will stamp nearly identical to what you see on your rubber stamper.

If you are having trouble with too much polish scraping out of your image try scraping it from a different direction.

4. Just as you rolled your stamper on the plate roll it over your nail. It will get a little messy on your skin, don't worry!

5. Clean up! Use some remover or acetone and a brush or Q-tip to clean up the extra polish you stamped on your skin.

6. Finish with a top coat and enjoy your gorgeous new manicure!
