Auditioning For Snow White

Penulis : Unknown on Monday, 17 June 2013 | 08:01

Monday, 17 June 2013

When I've taken Kayla to see plays or ballets she is mesmerized by what is happening on the stage. At the end of the performances she'll say it's her turn to be on stage. She enjoyed being on stage for the ballet recital and the Global Down Syndrome Foundation's Fashion Show.

So when I saw the Missoula's Children's Theater was on base last week to perform an original adaptation of Snow White I knew I had to take her to the auditions.

She was excited when I asked her if she wanted to try out to be in the play Snow White; of course I knew that she would want to BE Snow White. I made sure to explain to her that you had to be older to be Snow White but maybe she could play another character ... one of the dwarfs, or an animal.

Auditions were Monday and we had no idea what to expect. She's never been involved in a play before, much less auditioned for one. The only thing I was told was the kids would sit in a circle and the tour directors would ask their names and ages and see how loud they responded and get a feel for their personalities.

Well they did that and then some. The only thing I practiced with Kayla was saying her name loudly, and clearly.

It didn't go so well. I couldn't even hear her say her name when it was her turn. It was like she was just speaking to the tour director directly instead of making sure she was heard.

Then they had different lines that they had to say in a small group and then individually. Kayla's group had the line, "My calculations are always correct!" It's not a long sentence, but for a child with speech issues I admit I groaned when I heard that line. A word with 4 syllables is hard for Kayla; I usually have to break them up and we say it syllable by syllable until she can (mostly) get each syllable in the word. I knew 'calculations' was going to be tough for her to say.

When it was Kayla's turn it was obvious that she wasn't going to be able to say the full sentence. One of the tour directors, Kelly, was great and didn't miss a beat. She said to Kayla, "How about this? Just say 'my calculations." After Kayla repeated that, Kelly said, "are always correct." I was thankful she was able to split the sentence up for Kayla so she could still participate and say the line.

They ended up having a part for every child who auditioned. They said that doesn't always happen (I think they didn't have as many kids audition as they were expecting), but either way, Kayla was given the role of a frog - one of the Forest Animals.

I kept debating whether to thank the tour directors for giving Kayla a role, for a taking a chance with her and letting her participate in the play. But then that felt like I was saying they were doing her a favor, when really, why shouldn't she have a chance to be in the play? Kayla wasn't the only kid who didn't speak up loudly, who wasn't demonstrative, who mumbled or didn't speak clearly, who hadn't been in a play before, who didn't put much oomph into speaking their lines ... so if they were also chosen why shouldn't Kayla have been too?

I wasn't expecting her to be any of the main characters, and that's fine. I just wanted her to get her feet wet and see how she did and if she would have fun.

Most of the time the Forest Animals were on the stage they sat in a line and as the narrator was talking they did some had motions. Kayla did have a couple of speaking lines though. One of her lines (which was spoken with 2 other kids) was, "And we have a new queen!?"

In the first rehearsal this line sounded like this to Kayla, "Andwehaveanewqueen?!"

She tried to say it in unison with the other 2 kids, but she could only get out "new queen."

The next day I did ask Kelly if they could slow that line down just a beat. I practiced it with Kayla and if it was said more like, "And .. we .. have .. a .. new .. queen!?" she was more able to say the full line just about in unison.

Kelly had no problems with my request and immediately called the 3 of the kids over to practice it at the slower pace. This worked so much better for Kayla.

I am thankful that they didn't look at Kayla and see Down syndrome and automatically think it wasn't going to work out. Down syndrome never came up at all. If the tour directors had any reservations about Kayla they never expressed it to me ... they just accepted in her the play and treated her like everyone else.

Gang's All Here

Hey blog, hey. I managed to survive yet another weekend and am here, reporting for duty.
Don't all get too excited at once.

This weekend was an interesting one, to say the very least. You see, I'm not a huge fan of Father's Day seeing as my biological father up and decided he didn't want me somewhere along the course of my first 7 years of life. Soo, I may or may not be slightly bitter towards the whole holiday, in general. Shit happens, right? Right.

Anyways, my activities this weekend were pretty standard. It all started with a trip to heaven, aka Total Wine, where I stocked up on my essentials for a great weekend.
Boxed Chard, Fireball, Miller Lite - Gang's all here!
(5 cool points if you can name that movie)

Friday my bestie and I headed out for a sushi and sangria date before making our way to the bar. I didn't get my typical Friday after-work nap, so you can imagine my shock when I somehow managed to keep my eyeballs open late enough to make it to the rooftop after the bar. I gave myself a pat on the back for that little achievement.

Saturday I rewarded myself with such an achievement by sleeping in until about 10:30-11 and it was pretty much everything I needed in my life. And then some.

Shortly after I woke up, it was time to straighten up my apartment which was still a total disaster from Erin's visit. I think I threw away enough Miller Lite bottles to make an entire swan statue out of aluminum. I'm just saying, I'd probably display such a thing in my apartment.

Once the work was done, it was play time again. My other bestie came over and a pool day ensued.

The weather managed to hold up for us long enough to plow through a 12 pack of Miller and a 8 pack of nuggies from Chick Fil A (Complete with CFA sauce, le duh.). Nom.

Oh hey, look who actually got a photo of humans for her post. This girl, that's who. Unfortunately it's the only one. Sorry about that, kiddos. It's actually not entirely my fault... ok, it's totally my fault. I currently have over 5,000 photos on my phone and it physically wont allow me to take any more until I delete some shit. As much as it pains me to delete probably 500 photos of sushi, pizza, Bagel Bites, bevies, and Mac and Cheese, I guess it needs to be done. For blogging purposes, of course.

Yesterday I went to brunch with a friend and then headed home for a little napperooo before making my way to my parental's house for dinner. And to give you all an idea of what type of circus act I come from, my brother and I managed to get my dad the exact same card... which also happened to be the exact same card my mom gave my brother, too. Weird, yo!

Anywhoodles, that's all I've got for you today.
I should probably go make a dent in the massive amount of photos my boss so kindly sent me to work on. Pray for my eyeballs, I think they're about 100 adjusted aerial photos away from being crossed.

Yoga pants out.

How do you know each other?

Penulis : Unknown on Friday, 14 June 2013 | 05:00

Friday, 14 June 2013

In light of Erin's recent visit here I guess I just have a little something to discuss with you here, blog.

You see, Erin and I managed to get one solid question this time around and that question was "how do you know each other?". Now, I'm pretty sure I've made it no secret here that I hide my blog from 98% of my real life and I'm pretty sure Erin is close behind in that super accurate statistic.

Sooo, what do we do when we're placed with this question?
Um, well, actually we freeze and make things as awkward as humanly possible. I'm talking full on blank, deer in the headlights, stare for minutes on end until everyone around is so confused they begin to try and fill in the blank for us.

Did you guys go to school together? Yep.

Did you guys work together? Yep. That's it. Except this time I forgot to clue Erin in and she was slightly thrown off by the whole story and still had the lost puppy face on.

Are you guys related? Yep. Cousins, actually. The idiot who was pegging us for answers this time most definitely regrets it after Erin said something along the lines of "I'm tired of talking to you.". It was pretty fricken brilliant and had about 5 people in stitches from laughing so hard.

To Erin: Did you used to live here? Errrr... no...

Really, the list goes on and on. And on. And every time we just kind of sat there in blank stares. We then realized we're just really not so great at the whole cover up thing and we probably should have come up with a back story before.

I don't know why we weren't faced with this more when I was in NYC so we could have been prepared. I guess people were just too busy with wondering if we were sisters? Who knows.

Anyways, moral of this story, my friends. If you are going to meet your Blogland Buds and the people around you aren't familiar with your blogging-ego, go ahead and come up with a backstory prior to. Really though.

And now it's time to back our azz's up and this week I'm keeping the Erin tradition alive by using a song we shockingly jammed to and enjoyed all 5 days she was here. Enjoy!

It's #backthatazzup Friday!

The purpose: To start our weekend with some fantastic jams.
The station that inspired it: "Back That Azz Up" on Pandora Radio.
The rules: Link your jams up and have a jam sesh with all of us!

Happy Friday!
Grab a button, pick your jam, link up and let's get this weekend started off on the right foot!

Ho. Ly. Bananas.
I'm back and I'm alive. I think.

Sorry I didn't show my face around here yesterday, it's probably for the best though, if we're being honest. This face wasn't looking too hot yesterday and I was pretty sure I was on my death bed. You can thank my 5 day binder with Erin for that one.

You can also thank the 15 hours of hibernation I got last night for my presence here today. Yes, you read that correctly. I hauled my ass to bed as soon as I got home from work yesterday and didn't budge until my alarm went off at 7 this morning. I guess that's what happens when you get about 20 hours of drunken sleep over the course of 5 days.

I don't even know where to begin a post recapping what all happened over the course of her 5 days here but I'm going to try to highlight some of the activities we got ourselves in to. I think that'll be easiest. Or maybe not.

Warning: This post contains eleventy billion photos. You've been warned.

Hanging out at my hole-in-the-wall bar.
We did this a lot. Mostly because it's walking distance from my apartment.
We did this until the late late hours of the night. Or until 2am, you know, when it closes.
I actually dragged Erin here as soon as she got in town... she had quite the long adventure on the plane so it was only right to greet her with mass amounts of beer to get our 5 day party started.

Rooftop Party.
One of the things I really wanted to introduce her to was the shenanigans that happen above my apartment complex. We stayed up there until something like 5am and it didn't disappoint, as always.
Well, until we woke up the next morning and couldn't find Erin's wallet.

Any guesses as to where yours truly found said wallet (which happened to be filled with her entire damn paycheck?)... If you guessed the rooftop, you're right.

Oh, Erin also "didn't take a nap" on the rooftop either.
The good news is that her wallet was still present at this point.

BBQ Pringles and Miller Lite.
I prepped my apartment with 2 cans of BBQ Pringles and a case of Miller Lite for Erin's arrival and let's just say we put a dent in them. Also, we drank the bar out of draft Miller Lite.
And possibly the entire city of Orlando. This is not a joke. This may also be why I'm still in recovery 2 days later.

Here's what I woke up to on my living room floor after night one...

Cocoa Beach.
On day two we had a beach day which caused Erin to burn like the cutie little french fry she was for the remainder of the trip. I think my favorite little New Yorker might have slightly underestimated this Florida sun. Just a little bit.

Here's our "weeeeee, we're going to the beachhh" sexy faces.

Ella-Sebby-Erin-Miller Lite snuggles.

We're on a boat.
Or at least on day 3 we were. We went out to the lake for some fun in the sun and it was pretty much heaven, if I do say so myself.

Saki bombs and hibachi.
After the lake we decided it would be a good idea to go get nice and fat on some hibachi and saki bombs. And by nice and fat, I also mean nice, fat, and slightly hammered.
Thank you, saki.
Side note: I lose my shit over the onion volcano every. single. time.

Napkin blankets.
My bestie Erin has a little thing where she's always cold. When we're out and she gets cold, she turns to the first thing she can find that will find her warmth. Usually that thing is a napkin.
The photo on the left is from my trip to see her in NYC and the right would be her trip here.

Bestie bracelets!
On day 4 we went to Islands of Adventure at Universal so Erin's wildest dreams could come true and she could finally go to Harry Potter Land, because when my bestie says she wants to do something, we do it. While we were there we got bestie bracelets and I'm pretty sure mine is never ever coming off, like ever.

Food, food, fatty food.
I think it's safe to say that all diets and/or healthy eating choices were shoved far out the door on this trip. But, hey, what are vacations for?

Lounging by the pool.
Our fifth day was spent relaxing at the pool in my complex and it was the epitome of what I wish life was every day.

Erin's last meal. :(
Our last night was spent at the Italian place by my apartment and two bottles of wine.
We then proceeded to go to the bar until way too late, considering we had to wake up at 6am yesterday, but what else do you expect from us? We were sad and we needed to drown our sorrows.

And that's pretty much all I've got for you from this trip.
I'm still slightly in a haze from missing my bestie but I'm so thankful for the time we got to spend together.

Erin, once again, thank you for such an amazing time. You're one of the bestest friends I could ever ask for and I'm just the luckiest duck in all of the world to be able to call you my bestie! I know it wont be long until we're reunited so I knew this time it wasn't goodbye, it was I'll see you soon. I love you so, so many.

PS. Go read Erin's recap post now, it's only fair.

That Yellow Girl

Penulis : Unknown on Tuesday, 11 June 2013 | 08:17

Tuesday, 11 June 2013

Well hey hey all you little yoga pant lovers.
My name is Erin and I reside over at Living In Yellow.
This is what I look like when I make my husband take blogging pictures for me.
And this is what I look like when I attend stomach wrapping parties.

Now that we got that disturbing visual out of the way, we can continue.
My original plan was to come here and share with you all what I've learned from reading little miss Whit's "I Wore Yoga Pants" on a daily basis but then the Dairy Queen drive thru got the best of me which put me a few hours behind schedule. Really now that I think about it is the best lesson Whitney has ever taught me--never have a plan in blog land. That and carry Fireball with you every where you go.
I'm still relying on mini bottles of wine to get me through (life) but one of these days I'll get on Whitney's level.
For now I should probably tell you how much I dislike guest posts. Writing them. Reading them.
Really anything that has the word "guest" and "post" in the same sentence I just don't like.
All they are a bunch of "Hey come look at this really awesome post where I show off before and after pictures of our little lake cottage we just renovated!"
or "I wrote the best post one time on how my husband won't tell me I'm beautiful!" and then there's the "You should read this post I wrote about making money in blogging because it will make you a millionaire. Or something like that." kind of stuff.
And don't even get me started when the person writing the guest post is all like "OMG. I am best friends with  Giuliana Rancic--the proof is here, here, and here!!"
I mean who cares if that particular blogger's readers once shared over 800 anonymous comments ranging from sexual fantasies to hilarious pooping stories and so on.
Anyhow, I would never want to bore you with all of those fine details so for now I'll just say--come read my blog.
I will repay you with posts that are half as cool as Whitney's and songs that we all can get down to.

You're welcome.
