Call to Action Ref: Death of Ethan Saylor

Penulis : Unknown on Wednesday, 5 June 2013 | 12:58

Wednesday, 5 June 2013

The National Down Syndrome Society and National Down Syndrome Congress have put out a joint Call to Action regarding a push for an Independent Investigation into the death of (Robert) Ethan Saylor.

Mr Saylor's family still does not have justice for Ethan. There are unanswered questions surrounding his death five months ago. Question such as why he had a crushed larynx. Why did the situation escalate so quickly when Ethan's support person had re-entered the theater and was trying to intervene. Why couldn't the officer's have waited several minutes for Ethan's mom who was on her way?

From the joint release:
There has been much speculation about the details surrounding Ethan's tragic death since it occurred. The only way to get a complete understanding of what occurred so that appropriate measures can be taken with regard to those involved, is through an independent investigation. The Frederick County Sheriff and State's Attorney have already expressed their views that having Down syndrome was the sole contributor to Mr. Saylor's death, rather than the security guards' responses to Mr. Saylor, an individual with Down syndrome.

Please email, fax, and/or call Governor Martin O'Malley of Maryland to demand an independent investigation into the death of Ethan Saylor.

Governor Martin O'Malley
Toll-Free 800-811-8336
Office:  410-974-3901

·         Hello, I am (state name and where you live). I am a (parent, sibling, grandparent, aunt/uncle, teacher, friend) of a person with Down syndrome. I am (writing or calling) about Ethan Saylor, a man with Down syndrome who died while at The Regal Westview Movie Theaters in Frederick, Maryland in January.

·         I am requesting an independent investigation into Ethan's death, so the facts can come out and those responsible can be appropriately prosecuted.

·         While waiting for his support staff to retrieve their car after the movie, Ethan decided he wanted to remain for another showing. He verbalized to the Officers his intent to remain and refused to leave his seat. The Officers attempted to physically remove him from the theater. He was restrained face-down by three plain-clothes officers moonlighting as mall security. Ethan died from asphyxiation from a crushed larynx while handcuffed. His senseless and avoidable death was ruled a homicide by the Maryland Medical Examiner. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office (FCSO) and The Office of the Frederick County State's Attorney neglected to conduct a thorough investigation of the facts involving the case. A Grand Jury was convened but failed to hand down an indictment against the officers involved.

·      Despite the Sheriff's own public comment that the internal investigation has been completed and the officers have returned to full duty, the FCSO refuses to release investigation results to the family's attorney, despite numerous written requests.  Ethan's death was senseless and entirely avoidable.

Sincerely,
[Insert contact information]

Blame Erin

Can we talk about how Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan feel in the morning? Honestly. I wake up some mornings, like this morning for instance, and I just can't even imagine how the two of them even manage to move. All I did last night is drink beer and play a few rounds of darts, yet I've got myself a first class ticket on the struggle bus. DAFUQ?

Also, I'm having the hardest time focusing because all I can think about is that MY ERIN will be here in just 2 short days. TWO!!!!! Once again it just doesn't even feel real, except this time I get to hug the bajesus out of her and jump like a manic because she already knows I'm a psychopath (and she embraces it, awww.).

What are we doing during her extended stay here? Well, I can tell you one thing we aren't doing. Drinking alcohol. Nope, not us. There will be no Fireball, Chardonnay, Blue Moon, or Miller Lite consumed through the duration of her 5 days in Florida.

JAY KAY

Let's remember who we're talking about here.

Things I can't help but wonder about this trip:

How many times will we be referred to as sisters?

How many times will we wake up before 11am?

How many things will we not be able to blog about?

How many times will I have to refill the Brita pitcher?

How many days will we end up at the pool in my complex?

How many Bagel Bites will we consume?

Will I actually be able to coax Erin into going to my neighborhood dive bar?

Will Erin actually make a post about our time together this time?

And so this wraps up probably one of the most pointless posts I've written in a hot minute. Blame Erin, it's all her fault.

Maybe a little bit of the beer from last night too?

Focker out.

Dear Miley

Dear Miley,

Hey girl, how you doin? Pretty awesome, I'm assuming, considering that kick ass song you released yesterday blew up faster than it takes you to put a Hannah Montana wig on. Anyways, hi, I'm Whitney and sometimes I wear yoga pants to work. I've seen some photos of you wearing yoga pants, I'm assume that you were going to work, too. Sometimes I also wear your concert T-shirt to work, I like to think it's a great conversation piece.

I'm writing you today because I've decided we'd make the most perfect besties ever and I know that probably sounds a little bit creepy but I'm pretty harmless. For the most part.

You see, we have like eleventy bazillion things in common. For instance, I used to be engaged once too. It didn't work out so well, and your fiance is a shit ton more attractive than mine was (which is probably helping you stick it out a little longer than I did), but I like to think we could rock the single life together. If you wanted to introduce me to, say, Adam Levine or something like that, I'd be ok with it. I've got a few guys in mind that I think you could have some fun with, we'll talk details later.

Next up, let's talk about alter egos. You had the whole Hannah/Miley thing going on for a few years. Guess what? I have an alter ego, too. It doesn't take a wig to bring her out, no, instead it takes a cocktail or two and then she shines like a Christmas star. Her name's Nancy, I think you and her would really get along well, she thoroughly enjoys shaking things up. I'll tell you some stories about Nancy when we hang out, most of them aren't appropriate to share here but I know you'd approve.

If we ever went out together, we'd twerk it up to the maximum extent. Fo sho. If you wanted to wear unicorn onesies, I'd be cool with that too. I like tutus, we could really do some twerking in matching tutus... or not matching, if you prefer. You can totally bring your bestie Wiz along with us, he seems like a cool dude.

Lastly, we're both obsessed with our dogs. Dog people are just better, in general, as I'm sure you know. Well, I'm totally a dog person. Our dogs could be besties just like us and then we can go rescue 70 more pups and have a whole farm a fluffy K9 love. Tell me that doesn't sound like the best thing ever?

Anyways, I'm sure you'll be calling soon. Let me know when you want me to come over and I'll be there with a super sized box of Bagel Bites and a unicorn onesie on, ready to twerk the night away with you.

Love ya!

Bittersweet

Penulis : Unknown on Monday, 3 June 2013 | 13:52

Monday, 3 June 2013

It's been 10 months since my dad passed away.

I knew there would be things I would miss out on sharing with him; little and big things with his grandkids he wouldn't be around to witness.

I knew there would be all those 'firsts' to get through - his birthday, holidays, etc.

While there has been a lot of good things for us this year ... it has not been without pause. Each celebration has been bittersweet for me.

Bittersweet when:

- Lucas learned to ride a bike without training wheels
- Lucas learned to tie his shoes
- Kayla learned to ride a bike with training wheels
- Kayla made her 'catwalk' debut in the Global Down Syndrome Foundation's Be Beautiful Be Yourself Fashion Show
- Lucas graduated from preschool
(I can picture his comments on Facebook saying how proud Pepere is of them, and how beautiful Kayla looked at the fashion show).
- Joe completed his first marathon

... and the every day things I've missed discussing with, and hearing my dad's commentary on:
- The Red Sox hot start to the baseball season
- The change in managers, and players, for the Red Sox (I think he would be happy with the team, and manager, the Sox are fielding this year)
- The Celtics fading in the playoffs and what their prospects are for next year
- The Bruins having a 3-1 series lead over the Maple Leafs and needing OT in Game 7 to win and advance to Round 3
- The Pacers taking the Heat to Game 7

So bittersweet ... not being able to share moments with him anymore ...

Whitney's Shenanies

This weekend was nothing short of amazing which, once again, has me hating Monday just a little more than average. I also feel fiery hatred for today because I decided it was a good idea to pass out go to bed at 9pm last night which resulted in me being wide awake from the hours of 3am to 5:30am this morning. To say I'm grumpy this morning would be a massive understatement, I could probably take someone out with a simple glance currently.

I digress. I'll leave Negative Nancy out of the rest of this post.

Friday night the bestie and I walked over to the Italian restaurant by our complex, Antonio's, for some vino and delicious pizza. (No, I'm not in a grocery store. They have a little market in the restaurant.)  We've been making this a tradition lately and I don't hate it one bit. I've already got plans to bring Erin there when she's here (which is in 4 mofo-ing dayssssss!! jaoifsdjaowe).

After dinner we walked to our hole-in-the-wall for some darts and beers.
For some reason I found this selfie with one of the bartender's shades on my face when I woke up Saturday morning. I don't know what the meaning of it is but it was humorous to find because I'm pretty sure I spent a good portion of my night prancing around the bar in them. Oops.

Side note: I walked away and came back from the group I was with... when I walked back I walked right into a conversation about what else? This blog. Kill me ded, I was mortified. I don't even know why but I turned 50 shades of red and got really, really quiet. I don't know when I'll stop trying to hide this thing.

After closing time we made our way up to the rooftop to continue the party and ended up staying out wayyy later than we should have, which somehow resulted in us leaving this beer and a note on one of our neighbor's door.
Crazy kids.

Saturday was a pretty lazy one for me because of the whole staying-up-until-5am on Friday thing, so I spent most of the day lounging around and being way less productive than I needed to be. I guess that's what I get for thinking I'm capable of staying up later than I ever did even when I was in college. Oy.

Sunday was spent by the pool, which is always my favorite kind of day. We had some Andre mixed with cranberry RedBull and it was a big ol' cup of heaven. Go try it - it's even delicious with the Blueberry RedBull, too.

Other than that, I've got nothing. This week will be spent doing a lot of cleaning of my apartment in preparation for Erin's arrival on Friday night!! I've to attempt to get the mountain of dirty clothes in my closet down to a minimal size so she doesn't immediately get frightened by my lack of cleaning skills and fly right back to NYC the day she arrives.

Have a non-Monday Monday.
Over and out.
